about

This recording of Robert and I improvising in the studio was previously available as one part of my "12 in 2007 Project," a series of monthly, album-length free downloads of brand new material meant to celebrate my 40th birthday at the end of 2006. It's really hard to imagine now, but 15 years ago the idea of listening to music online was still considered only vaguely viable. I was certain I was doing something unprecedented and forward-looking, but I couldn't get anyone to write about it. One publication said they would only assign a reviewer if I provided CD-R's of the music. How times have changed! Robert and I had played together several times by then and he lived close to my studio, so making the recording was a cinch, although it was a very hot July day and with a/c being too loud for recording, I remember us suffering and sweating quite a bit. I can't hear that in the record though. Robert sounds incredible, and with a decade-and-a-half's distance I can hear that I kept up with him far better than I remembered. Enjoy! - Reuben Radding

When Reuben and I shoehorned ourselves into his tiny studio on Myrtle Avenue, we had been playing as a duo for a few years, and also in trio with Lukas Ligeti (drums). In the half dozen or more of our duo performances, we had developed our particular language and dialogue. My feelings about our duo differ from Reuben’s in that I never thought that either of us was trying to keep up with the other. Playing with Reuben was always challenging and inspiring; a true duo of equals.

I love the power and energy of this music, and it’s joy. In 2006, I had just become a father (at age 56!) and was excited, energized and often exhausted. There are, as always, a plethora of nuances to the music’s emotional expression. Particularly strong, I feel, are happiness and optimism — we were at our best.
